How To Survive Blue Monday

Blue Monday is the name given to a day in January that is considered to be the most depressing day of the year. The concept was created in 2005 by a UK-based travel company, but has since gained widespread recognition and has even been the subject of scientific research.

Despite its name, Blue Monday is not an officially recognised holiday. However, it falls on the 16th January each year and is often associated with the post-holiday blues, cold weather, and lack of sunlight. All of these factors can contribute to feelings of sadness and low mood.

If you're feeling down on Blue Monday (or any other day), I have written some things you can do to boost your mood and feel happier. Here they are:

  1. Get outside: Exposure to natural light can help improve your mood and increase your energy levels. Even a short walk or spending a few minutes in the sunshine can make a difference.

  2. Exercise: Regular physical activity has been shown to improve mood and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. Choose an activity that you enjoy, such as walking, dancing, or yoga, and aim to get at least 30 minutes of exercise per day.

  3. Practice self-care: Take time to relax and recharge. This could be as simple as lighting an aromatherapy candle and relaxing in a warm bath, or treating yourself to a manicure or massage.

  4. Connect with others: Spending time with friends and loved ones can boost your mood and provide a sense of support and connection. Make time to socialize and have fun, whether that means going out for a meal or having a movie night at home.

  5. Get enough sleep: Lack of sleep can contribute to feelings of sadness and low energy. Make sure you're getting enough rest by establishing a bedtime routine and sticking to it.

By taking care of yourself and incorporating these tips into your daily routine, you can improve your mood and feel happier on Blue Monday and beyond.
